about

On a high level, Divine Life is about letting go. Down a few steps from there it's about how letting go of the dreams of youth can open up new, more divine dreams than one could have imagined. The wisdom of maturity and letting life unfold and reveal its grander, more fulfilling self - things you don't (and can't) realize when you're holding on so tight to youthful fantasies of who you want to be.

The specific story is how my brother and I were very close growing up, through our mid-twenties. We wrote songs together from a very young age, his lyrics and my music was our partnership. But aside from the good times, it was also a lonely and frustrating time trying to find our way to musical success. We were totally enraptured by our own fantasy.

Finally letting go of our rock star dreams together, splitting up, and living our own separate lives was very difficult. Everything we created and went through previously felt like a waste and failure. And yet...many years later, our kids/families love those songs, there is new life and new music, and our experiences have become so much more meaningful than they ever could have been if we had stuck to the original path. Only looking back over the years does the value of our breaking apart and letting go of the fantasy become clear.

lyrics

Remember when you said, "There's never been a moment when the stars aligned"?
Seemed it was never our time
Remember when you said, "The kind of joy we're wanting is for other guys"?
Seemed love was not on our side

We believed all those lies
We did not realize

We were coming alive
(Oh, we were not alone)
Yeah, we laughed 'til we cried
(Oh, we wanted rock n' roll)
And when the dream finally died
(Oh, we had to split to grow)
We'd feel the freedom inside
Then life would be divine

Remember when I said, "I'm not sure that everything will be alright"?
Seemed I was losing my mind
Remember when I said, "Your poems and my melodies will not survive"?
No matter how hard we try

We believed all those lies
We did not realize

We were coming alive
(Oh, we were not alone)
Yeah, we laughed 'til we cried
(Oh, we wanted rock n' roll)
And when the dream finally died
(Oh, we had to split to grow)
We'd feel the freedom inside

We were coming alive
(Oh, we were not alone)
Yeah, we laughed 'til we cried
(Oh, we wanted rock n' roll)
And when the dream finally died
(Oh, we had to split to grow)
We'd feel the freedom inside
Then life would be divine

Oh, life would be divine
Yeah, life would be divine
